What Motivates You to Change?
I'm putting a sticker on my calendar for each day that I exercise. When I didn't feel like going for a walk this morning, I said to myself, "Then you won't be able to put a sticker on the calendar." That motivated me to get up and get moving. If a little sticker can motivate me to exercise, why doesn't losing weight motivate me to eat better? When contemplating eating a donut, I said to myself, "If you eat that, you will not lose weight this week." I ate it anyway. While mulling this thought over, I've come to the conclusion that the sticker is an immediate reward that I can see. Whereas, the weight lost won't show up until some future date. If my hips would suddenly be a shade slimmer by skipping the donut, I'd have skipped it. I need to figure out how to motivate myself for future results and not immediate rewards. I don't have the answer yet, but at least I'm asking myself the question. How do you motivate yourself to continue working toward future goals?
