The Electric Tricycle Improved An Excellent Idea

By Edward Turner

Rechargeable vehicles in our cities have revolutionized what it means to be a pedestrian. It makes truly commuting on foot possible for distances over two miles, and allows for speedy short trips without belching exhaust into the air. However, before you put an engine on your skateboard, you should take a longer look at the electric tricycle.

Children have been riding skateboard style scooters both with and without powered mobility for decades. Sometime in the late Nineties the pivoting stand-alone scooter was introduced, but most people had difficulty learning how to ride those effectively. The next wave of genius came when someone put the rechargeable motor from the pivoting model onto the skateboard scooter their kids were riding, and a new hazardous means of transport was born.

Having a straight-back but sitting posture allows us to spend more time riding around, as stiffness in our lower backs and soreness on our feet is a distraction. We saw long ago that those upright stick-handles were just a little too low to hold onto without being stooped forward. This pose actually encourages adults to ride these skateboard style scooters with no hands.

Even if the model is designed to fit a taller adult, it is still standing. Discomfort creates distractions just as dangerous as a cell phone or the loose dog down the street. Older people really cannot risk having an accident, especially since the tricycles are sometimes designed to go faster than scooters or their Segway counterpart.

Pedestrians are just as much of a hazard on the scooter roads as cars and trucks. In fact, scooters travel the same sidewalks as pedestrians and bicyclers alike, but at three to five times the speed. Accidents which cause grievous injuries are just as possible whether they involve automobiles, bicycles, other scooters, people, or stray pets.

Tricycles allow the rider/driver to sit in an upright pose that promotes greater alertness to their environment. A nice round seat, probably chosen to match the size of their own bum, is the most ideal scenario for a long day of site seeing in the city. Even if one has lost their driving license for motor cars twenty years prior, they are still able to safely motor themselves to whatever destination they set their sites on.

Breaking systems come standard on most tricycles, along with rear-view mirrors that should have been standard on bicycles a century ago. Many scooters, including the motorized variety, were without breaks in the beginning. However, as these vehicles become more and more a part of city travel, breaking systems standard just makes sense.

Other safety features available are a horn to warn others of their approach, headlamp and rear lights, and the bright colors available all help them to stand out in any light. One might even string LED lights through the wheel spokes in order to increase their visibility. Like bicycles, little can be done in the event of rain, but many models can be folded down to make it easier to carry on a bus or train.

Unfortunately, the one safety feature that cannot be bought is sense enough to hold the front wheel with both hands. Tricycles are generally stable when ridden properly, as it is based on a tripod structure. However, not every rider understands that their body makes part of the tripod, and without a foot on each pedal and a hand on each handle, the intended design is incomplete.

Here Is Information On Recumbent Trikes

By Michelle Hughes

A vehicle that is either powered by human labor or gravity and has three wheels is referred to as a tricycle. Trike is usually used as the short form for the name tricycle. Trikes are of different kinds, including cycle rickshaws and freight. Different functions such as recreation, transportation, exercise, and shopping among others are achieved using trikes. Transporting goods using tricycles is very common in developing countries of Asia and Africa. This is what recumbent trikes are all about.

According to historical records, the history of tricycles goes way back to either 1655 or 1680. Also, history mentions that tricycles were invented by a disabled German man. The man was called Stephan Farffler and his intention was to enable himself keep his mobility. Farffler designed a tricycle which was powered by hand cranks. He borrowed the concept from his watch-making career.

As years passed, different kinds of tricycles were made by different people from different parts of the world. Most popular tricycles came from Britain and France. The original design of making tricycles was patented by a British inventor known as Dennis Johnson. A common feature across the inventions is that they were either powered using hands or legs.

Trikes are usually commonly used by kids and the aged in the West. They are preferred by these groups of individuals since they offer more stability as compared to bicycles. However, despite tricycles being more stable when they move in a straight line, their dynamic lateral stability is poor. This implies that the person riding should be very careful when negotiation corners to avoid toppling over.

There are various associations in countries where people love tricycles like the UK where one can register. Activities such as day rides, tours and time trials are usually organized by these associations. Regulations in the tricycle industry and safety standards for consumers are usually set by the associations. Other responsibilities of the associations are to maintain statistics about tricycles and so on.

Various tricycles vary in the way their wheels are configured. Tadpole and delta are some of the most common configuration for wheels in tricycles. There is one wheel at the front and two rear wheels for the case of delta configuration. On the contrary, two wheels are at the front while one wheel is at the rear for the case of tadpole wheel configuration. Other kinds of wheel configurations have been in use over the years but do not exist anymore.

Trikes that are used currently are also of different kinds with recumbent and upright tricycles being the most common. Upright tricycles have an open or a diamond-shaped frame just like a bicycle. They can either have tadpole or delta wheel configuration and are steered using a handlebar. One should be very careful when riding non-tilting upright tricycles since they are less stable.

Recumbent is the other type of trike in use today. This model offers more stability because of low center of gravity. There is also less aerodynamic drag. However, they cost more, are heavier, and they are wider. Given that the seat is usually very low, they may be less visible to other traffic.
