| If you wake up in the morning with breath that doesn't smell anything like a daisy, I can relate. It's definitely not the most pleasant way to start the day. But considering that 50% to 65% of the world's population experiences bad breath, it's safe to say that you and I are not alone in our suffering. | Truthfully, there's no surefire way to defeat morning breath. But there are many different things you can try. Below, Jessica Sandoz, a registered dietitian at Healthline, lets us know what they are. | | | | Be gone, morning breath! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik March 20, 2025 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | Is there anything I can eat (or not eat) to make my breath smell better in the morning? | | A: | The main cause of bad breath is bacteria in your mouth, so good oral hygiene — brushing at least twice a day, flossing after brushing, getting cleanings every 6 months — is the place to start.
Your diet may also play a role in how your breath smells. If you're worried or self-conscious about your morning breath, consider limiting these foods, especially within a few hours of bedtime: - allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic, which have sulfur-containing compounds that can break down during digestion and release odorous gases (Think: rotten egg smell)
- high sugar foods, which can promote sulfur-producing bacterial growth
- spicy foods, which may stimulate acid production in your stomach and may also contribute to reflux
- fish, which can leave a lingering fishy odor
- caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which can dry out your mouth and increase bacteria
At the same time, it may help to consume more: Ultimately, your breath probably isn't going to taste or smell its best first thing in the morning — especially if you sleep with your mouth open. Mouth breathing dries out your saliva, which is the main way your body flushes bacteria from your mouth.
If this is you, consider leaving a water bottle next to your bed to drink right when you wake up. Water helps increase saliva production and flush bacteria and food particles from your mouth, which can be one of the quickest ways to improve morning breath. | | | Jessica Sandoz, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
