| My mom always told me to avoid dairy when I was sick because it would further clog my sinuses with mucus. I never questioned this advice because, based on how my mouth feels after eating a bowl of ice cream, it felt pretty logical to me. | Then, a few weeks back, a reader dropped into our inbox asking whether eating dairy actually creates more phlegm. After a quick Google search, we learned that many people have this same question. So we put it to Mohini Bhakta, a registered dietitian at Healthline, who, as it turns out, received the very same advice from her own mom. Below, she separates fact from fiction. | | | | Cheers, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik April 25, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | My mom always told me not to eat dairy when I had a cold because it would give me more mucus. Is this true? | | A: | This made me laugh because my mom would tell me the same thing! Turns out, a lot of our parents did!
I have to say, scientific research on the relationship between dairy and mucus production is a bit limited, but the jury concludes that there's no clear link between the two.
Drinking milk, however, does thicken your saliva, which can leave a mouthfeel that resembles phlegmy mucus. In studies where people reported more phlegm after drinking milk, it was actually found to be thickened saliva instead.
Many physicians actually recommend having yogurt when we're sick to get some good bacteria in our guts or to help soothe a sore throat. So rest assured, if you're usually able to tolerate dairy, then there's no need to avoid it when you get sick. | | | Mohini Bhakta, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
