A Story of the Traveling Pants
Having just finished getting the stress of my taxes done (whew!), I did some household shopping today and was feeling quite relaxed. Instead of going home, I walked for a bit stopping in this store and that, and was happy the weather was mild and the sun was out. I was wearing a hip length wool jacket with a turtleneck and sweater underneath (layering is a must in NYC), and had a pashima scarf around my neck and denim backpack on my back. With my forearm crutch in one hand and a big shopping bag in the other, I was feeling bundled up and overloaded-- and also like my pants were slipping down from my waist with every other step. I had to actually stop, rest my bag on the ground and my crutch against a wall to free my hands to be able to yank up my pants. I did it again while waiting at the bus stop to go home. When the bus pulled up and I stepped on, I felt my pants slip down again and assumed the backpack had ridden up and that was causing the problem. Before I sat down, I pulled my pants up again and my jacket down. First thing I thought was that these pants were old and stretched out, and it was time to retire them. Second thing I thought was that I must look insane from the back... kind of like an elderly woman with sagging pants hanging down almost to my butt! At home, I examined the waistband and material in the pants and they looked like they always did. Then it dawned on me--- these pants hadn't stretched out, I'd shrunk. Out came the tape measure and sure enough, two inches were gone from my hips and three from my waist. I smiled when putting the pants in the laundry bin. They will be washed and packed up in the bag of giveaway items I'm collecting. Goodbye traveling pants, may you rest in peace on someone else's big hips and butt.
