| One of life's annoying conundrums is that many foods that taste great don't make us feel great. This is most apparent in my own body when eating extra-greasy food, which doesn't tend to sit well in my gut, even though my taste buds say, "Bring it on!" | Spicy food can create a similar debacle — especially very spicy food. Today's topic was actually brought to my attention by one of you, dear readers. So I posed the question to Lindsay Mahar, a registered dietitian at Healthline. She shares her thoughts below. | | | | Feel better! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik November 26, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | Why do I feel bloated after eating spicy food? | | A: | Eating spicy foods can evoke an array of responses, from pure joy and delight to dislike and physical pain. It's common to experience bloating, gas, or other gastrointestinal discomfort after consuming spicy foods. These symptoms can be particularly bothersome if you have irritable bowel syndrome or gastric reflux.
There are a couple of reasons why spicy food can upset your stomach: - Eating spicy food can be harder to digest and increases the production of stomach acid, which can trigger gastric reflux and feelings of fullness, bloating, and gas.
- Capsaicin, the compound in peppers that causes a burning sensation, can irritate the lining of your stomach and intestines, causing symptoms of indigestion.
If you're a spicy food lover and not about to give it up for a little gas, you can try to relieve bloating with these quick tips: - ultra-processed foods
- Go for a walk.
- Try yoga poses.
- Use peppermint capsules.
- Try gas relief capsules.
- Try an abdominal massage.
- Use essential oils.
- Take a warm, relaxing bath.
If you have frequent bloating that doesn't go away when you remove the suspected food, talk with a healthcare professional to learn what could be behind your concerns. | | | Lindsay Mahar, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
