| If you're reading this newsletter, there's a good chance that you care about being healthy. And if you share your life with a partner, it would stand to reason that you care about their health as well. But what happens if your partner can't make their healthy habit stick? Below, Lisa Valente, a registered dietitian at Healthline, shares some actionable insights into how you can try to navigate this delicate situation. | | | | You got this! Role-modeling those healthy habits and behaviors yourself is probably one of the best things you can do. Invite them to come to the gym or go on a walk with you, stock the fridge with nonalcoholic drink options, and perhaps offer to make a yummy dinner together full of nutritious foods.
You could also suggest carving out some time with your partner to set goals together.
There are many different philosophies around goal setting. The SMART goal framework is an evidence-based approach that involves setting small, incremental objectives that eventually build up to achieving a larger goal. When creating SMART goals, you should make sure each goal is: - specific
- measureable
- attainable
- relevant
- time-bound
For example, if you're looking to improve your nutrition, your first goal may be to cook dinner at home three nights a week for 2 months. After the 2 months are up, you may layer on an additional goal of making a recipe that includes fatty fish one night per week for another 2 months.
However you choose to approach goal-setting, consider writing down your intentions and scheduling regular check-ins with your partner to see how things are going. This can help you both stay accountable and discuss any obstacles they or you have been facing.
But the most important thing is to proceed with kindness, patience, and an understanding that, at the end of the day, it is up to them, not you, to make the change. | | | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
