Study: Love Seafood? You’re In for Two Pieces of Good News

The Journal of the American Medical Association just published a study that has two pieces of good news. 1. Seafood consumption is linked to a lower risk of dementia, and 2. The mercury in fish is not linked to dementia. "Everybody's saying seafood has so many health benefits, but everybody's afraid of the mercury," said study author Martha Clare Morris, a professor of nutritional epidemiology at Rush University in Chicago. "(But) we saw absolutely no evidence that higher levels of mercury in the brain were associated with any of the neuropathologies associated with dementia." The authors also noted that it's hard to tell if it's the Omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood that lowers the dementia risk or if it's because of more complicated factors. The researchers arrived at their conclusions by by studying 286 autopsied brains.
